All pounamu is sacred to Ngai Tahu, the southern-most tribe (iwi) of New Zealand.  Your heart necklace is carved in Hokitika from local greenstone.

The stone used for the pictured heart is Hapopo greenstone.  Its colour ranges from medium green to a dark forest green, with a unique mottled texture.  The name originates from Ka Umu o Hapopo (Big Bay), located in Poutini ki te toka (South Westland).
